New Slate Roof in Barnstaple

slate roof barnstaple roofer

Here is our most recent job for Mr Ward on his farm In Fremington near Barnstaple.

The barn was in bit of a sorry state and once it was stripped of the existing slates several rafters needed replacing which we did before felt and battening.

The facias and bargeboards were also renewed and had 3 coats of light oak wood stain for protection. All guttering was replaced with black half round and down pipes fitted.

The roof is slated now with Brazilian grey greens using hook fix and all perimeters nailed with copper nails.

The ridge were fixed with dry ridge system which means they are screwed on to get maximum protection from storm conditions.

Mr Ward was very pleased with the finished roof as were we.

Macc Ladders for slate repairs

Using our new Macc Ladders for the first time on a slate repair for our client in Grencliff, Abbotsham.

These ladders were bought specifically for jobs like this as they are very sturdy and spread the load of the operative, therefore, minimising possible damage to the roof especially slates.

The ladder comes in 2 metres and 1-metre sections so you can use the length of ladder required for each job and the sections can be kept in the van instead of the roof rack. This bit of kit makes our life a lot easier and a great addition to Griffin Roofing’s plant.

Full roof replacement at West Down

Replaced the whole of this roof at West Down and as you can see from the before photos there was a mixture of slates due to lots of repairs and the stacks had copper flashing which I have only seen a couple of times in my 44 years in this trade. New Brazilian slates with hook fix and chimneys with lead flashing give an altogether more appealing look and no more worries for the customer about slates coming down in bad weather.

My thanks to Matt and Ryan of MR scaffolding for doing a great job with the challenge of the full length conservatory on the rear of the property.

Thanks to Mr and Mrs Williams also for keeping us supplied with tea and biscuits!

Below are the "before" pictures, now they can look forward to a dry winter!!

New slate roof for SEL Clarke Ltd

Latest roof completed for our client Roger Clarke of local business SEL Clarke Ltd.

This roof has close on 7000 slates with 6 velux windows and solar panels which are being installed now we have finished. Some testing conditions were experienced on this one as it is in West Down so close to the coast.

All slates are hook fixed and all perimeters nailed and ridge is dry system.

Valleys formed with code 5 lead and for all the gables we used easyverge which eliminates any wind uplift.

Still got a GRP roof to do on the front entrance which should be completed this week. We have had the Gel top coat specially mixed so the colour will match the facias.

New Slate roof in Abbotsham, Bideford, North Devon

This new Slate Roof job was recently completed in Abbotsham, North Devon. It was a complete strip of the existing roof then recovered with Brazilian Grey Green slates and hook fix.

Terracotta ridge dry fixed really sets the roof off nicely and the Easyverge system gives added protection from the wind as this property is right next to the coast.

You can see from the stunning pictures below.  It got quite windy up on that roof !!

Before and After - Tiles to Slates

The above picture was taken BEFORE we started work

The client called us to ask for different options on what could be put on his roof as the old clay tiles had seen better days and there was no insulation in the loft. We took several different tiles and slates as samples and it was decided that Brazilian slates with hook fix would be used. A contrasting terracotta ridge and hip really set the slates off and the client was delighted with his new roof and insulated loft. From start to finish the job took us 7 days which with all the valley and hip cutting was quite good.

This was the excellent result!
